21 Dec Boosting Biodiversity at Batemans Bay
To boost fish reproduction, and provide new location for fishing while easing pressure on natural reefs, NSW Department of Primary Industries went to tender for an innovative offshore artificial reef (OAR) installed 3.5km of Bateman’s Bay, north-east of Moruya Heads.
Working in partnership with SEAO2, SMC Marine built and deployed a “constructed habitat”, with greater ability to promote marine biodiversity and enhance fishing opportunities than ever achieved before. The artificial reef is a 12m high 70 tonne steel structure that will withstand intense storms and strong currents on the ocean seabed while offering a sustainable fish habitat solution.
