"Indigenous residents of Belyuen Community have benefitted from the commitment made to engage in meaningful training and employment with SMC Marine on various and numerous components of the construction of the New Mandorah Marina Facility"

Proven community and stakeholder engagement outcomes
For delivery of the Cairns Marine Precinct Early Works project, SMC Marine achieved a very high degree of local participation. Over 80% of the expenditure on that project went to local people and industry and 92.5% personnel on site were locals. We achieved this through our ‘local first’ approach: we sought out local contractors, suppliers and service providers to fulfil requirements before looking elsewhere for all of our procurement and resourcing needs.
We also exceeded our training performance targets by 116%, representing over 10% of total hours worked. Overall, we provided 56 workers with training throughout the project including 19 New Entrant trainees and apprentices.
More than 90% of the subcontractors and suppliers engaged by SMC Marine for the project – 193 out of 213 – were awarded to Territory businesses. In total, 404 people were employed to work on the project including 35 Aboriginal people and SMC Marine contributed $62,700 in community benefit for Wagait Beach and Belyuen residents by supporting the Belyuen Community Government Council’s mobile Kenbi Kafe, supporting the Cox Country Club and its activities, funding an electronic message board at the Wagait Shire Council offices and donation of excess rock to local community groups.
Demonstration of outstanding commitment to workforce development, with training accounting for over 10% of total worked hours. This project supported the training of:
- Three undergraduate engineers
- One metal fabricator
- One trainee project manager identifying as Indigenous
- 77 employees across high-risk work licence categories and project-specific training
